FIRST-EVER FORD POLICE INTERCEPTOR UTILITY DEBUTS

Ford Motor Co. has revealed its newest pursuit-rated vehicle – Ford’s first-ever specially designed Police Interceptor utility built for the rigors of police work.

The new vehicle is designed to complement Ford’s all-new Police Interceptor sedan, which was introduced earlier this year. Combined, the two vehicles provide law enforcement agencies the ultimate in versatility and choice, something no other police vehicle on the road today can match.

Ford, the police vehicle market leader for 15 years, developed both Police Interceptors to allow departments to maximize versatility without sacrificing quality. Both vehicles will debut simultaneously and be offered without interruption when production of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ends in late 2011.

    Meeting a spectrum of needs
Ford’s new Police Interceptor utility vehicle is equipped with the highly efficient 3.5-liter V6 engine. This Ti-VCT engine, delivering at least 280 horsepower and E85 compatibility, is mated to a unique six-speed automatic transmission that combines lowered initial gears for improved off-the-line acceleration and higher gearing for improved efficiency at lower engine rpm when cruising. Two drive train options are available, providing off-road capability teamed with a multipurpose cargo area specially calibrated for loads up to 800 pounds.

Both the sedan and utility are rated for the severe-duty cycle that police professionals undertake on a daily basis and will deliver at least 20 percent more fuel efficiency than the 4.6-liter single overhead cam (SOHC) V8 offered in the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

    Keeping it safe
Like the sedan, the utility version of the Police Interceptor puts a priority on safety. Continuing Ford’s safety leadership includes engineering both Police Interceptors to pass 75-mph rear-end crash testing. Currently, the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is the only pursuit sedan to meet this test.

The Police Interceptor utility vehicle features Ford’s exclusive Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag rollover protection system that helps protect passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes. The multiple side-curtain airbags use Ford’s unique roll-fold technology to help position them between the occupant and the side window.

    Staying in control
Unique to the utility vehicle is Ford’s state-of-the-art curve control technology, designed to help drivers maintain control of their vehicles when taking curves at high speeds. Curve control senses when a vehicle is entering a curve too quickly, and can apply four-wheel smart braking to reduce vehicle speed by up to 10 mph in approximately one second and help drivers follow their intended path.

    Rigorously tested, police-tuned
Just like its sedan partner, Ford’s Police Interceptor utility vehicle has been put through its paces, undergoing a battery of torture tests to ensure its individual components can hold up to rigorous driving. Certification testing designed by the Michigan State Police and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department proved out the durability and capability of the vehicle through a variety of punishing tracks.

To make sure the utility vehicle can take the heat – quite literally – the AWD drive train is equipped with a water-cooled power transfer unit that guarantees capability in all conditions. Across the board, brakes have been increased in size and performance, and the cooling package features a heavy-duty alternator and larger radiator. Standard 18-inch wheels are vented, designed to work in concert with the enhanced brake system.

    Functional, inside and out
Inside, the functionality continues, with the vehicle’s interior package uniquely designed for the needs of police, maximizing officer comfort and cargo capacity. The front seats are designed with a lower bolster to accommodate utility belts, and just like the sedan, Ford’s Police Interceptor utility offers a column shift, designed to leave the console area free for the ever-increasing amounts of equipment necessary for officers to do their jobs.

The second row features a vinyl, easy-to-clean bench seat that folds flat for versatility. Because police require a lot of gear, additional space in the utility provides plenty of room for K-9 officers and SWAT operations, including room for the full-size spare tire to be stored safely under the cargo area.

The new utility vehicle also features:

Ford SYNC: The Ford-exclusive, hands-free information system provides officers the ability to operate their various communication and audio equipment by voice control.

BLIS (Blind Spot Information System): The system uses two radar sensors located in the rear quarter panels to detect vehicles in the surrounding lanes. If a vehicle enters the driver’s blind spot zones, the system alerts the driver with a warning light in the side view mirror.

Cross-traffic alert: This system uses the existing BLIS radar modules to sense oncoming traffic when slowly backing out of a parking spot. This industry-exclusive system functions only while the vehicle is in reverse and warns when cross traffic appears within three car-widths.

Rearview camera: When the vehicle is in rear camera mode, a color image with guidance markers on the rearview mirror will assist the driver in backing up.

Reverse Sensing System: An audible tone will alert the driver to certain objects up to 6 feet behind the vehicle.

Remappable steering wheel controls: Helping officers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, remappable steering wheel controls offer the police the flexibility to work specifically with police aftermarket equipment to customize voice-controlled lights and sirens at the push of a button.

THE BOSS IS BACK: 2012 FORD MUSTANG BOSS 302 BRINGS ROAD RACING LEGEND BACK TO THE STREETS

Ford gave the green light only once before: In 1968, management approved a special Mustang – a car that sacrificed nothing in its quest to be the best all-around road-going performance machine ever created by Ford Motor Co. That car became the 1969 Mustang Boss 302, and it remains one of the world’s most sought-after examples of American performance.

Forty-two years later, Ford has given the green light again.

The team of Ford engineers, designers and stylists – all Mustang enthusiasts to the core – that created the groundbreaking 2011 Mustang GT has distilled a new model to its purest form, strengthening, lightening and refining each system to create a race car with a license plate. Its name: the 2012 Mustang Boss 302.

To celebrate the racing heritage of the new Mustang Boss 302, Ford will also offer a limited number of Boss 302 Laguna Seca models, named for the track where Parnelli Jones won the 1970 Trans-Am season opener in a Boss 302. Aimed at racers more interested in on-track performance than creature comforts, the Boss 302 Laguna Seca has increased body stiffness, a firmer chassis set-up and an aerodynamics package carried over almost in its entirety from the Ford Racing Boss 302R.

    Philosophy and power train

Driving the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 was intended from the outset to be a visceral experience, packed with raw, unbridled performance across the spectrum: Acceleration, handling, braking, and top speed are all equally matched for perfect balance on a car operating within the framework of legally defined safety, noise and emissions regulations.

Led by Mike Harrison, the V8 engine team approached Boss from the top down: With 412 horsepower from 5.0 liters, the 2011 GT engine was already an incredible performer. But to achieve the high-rpm horsepower that would make the engine competitive on the track, a new intake was essential. The resulting runners-in-the-box plenum/velocity stack combination the engine team developed was impressive enough that it got the green light after one short drive.

Helping the intake build power, revised camshafts using a more aggressive grind are actuated with the same twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) mechanism used on the Mustang GT. More aggressive control calibration yields 440 horsepower and 380 pounds-feet of torque, while still offering a smooth idle and low-end torque for comfortable around-town driving.

A race-inspired clutch with upgraded friction materials transmits power, while a short-throw, close-ratio six-speed manual transmission handles gear change duties.

Power is delivered to a 3.73 ratio rear axle using carbon fiber plates in the limited-slip differential to improve torque handling and longevity. For those who want even more precise control over power delivery, a torque-sensing (Torsen) limited-slip differential is an available option coupled with Recaro front seats.

    Sounds like the Boss
Up front, a Boss-specific intake system is tuned to feed the engine with minimum restrictions. A retuned induction sound tube provides concrete aural evidence of what’s occurring under the hood. And, in the Boss exhaust system engineers had some fun.

“With an exhaust system, we have to consider three constraints: legal noise restrictions; backpressure, which can rob power; and ground clearance,” explains Shawn Carney, Mustang NVH engineer. “Since the 2011 Mustang GT exhaust is already so free-flowing – it came in way under our backpressure targets – we already had excellent performance; we were able to tune the exhaust system for a unique sound. Combined with the rush of the intake, the exhaust system really envelops the driver in V8 sound.

Every Boss features a unique quad exhaust system: Two outlets exit in the rear similar to a standard Mustang GT. The other two outlets exit to either side of the exhaust crossover, sending exhaust through a set of metal discs that act as tuning elements before the pipes terminate just ahead of the rear wheel opening. Visually subtle, the side pipes flow very little exhaust but a lot of exhaust sound, providing a sonic experience unlike any other Mustang – and giving home tuners an additional avenue for modification.

“We added the attenuation discs to meet legal regulations, but we knew buyers might operate these cars in situations where noise regulations weren’t an issue,” Carney said. “The disc is removable and includes a spacer plate sized to match aftermarket exhaust dump valves. If an owner wants to add a set of electric valves, they just undo two bolts on either side; the disc and spacer slide out and the valve will slide right in. And the side pipes are tuned so that drivers can run wide-open and the sound levels are comfortable – very aggressive but livable for an all-day track outing.”

    Suspension and steering
In keeping with the Boss mandate to provide the best-handling Mustang ever, the already strong Mustang GT suspension system has been further refined. Higher-rate coil springs on all four corners, stiffer suspension bushings and a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar all contribute to the road racing mission, and Boss models are lowered by 11 millimeters at the front and 1 millimeter at the rear versus the Mustang GT. The real key to handling, though, is in the adjustable shocks and struts, standard on all Boss Mustang models.

Also unique is the method of shock adjustment. Ditching the weight and complexity of electronic wizardry, the Mustang team opted for traditional race-style hands-on adjustability – similar to the Gabriel shocks available on the original Boss 302.

To complement the suspension, the speed-sensitive electronic steering system has been retuned to maximize feedback and road feel to the driver. The driver is also given the option of fine-tuning the steering feel to his liking by selecting one of three settings through the instrument cluster menu: Comfort, normal and sport modes help offer track-tuned steering when desired without sacrificing low-speed maneuverability in parking situations and everyday commuting.

    Exterior and interior design
To set Boss apart, each car will have either a black or white roof panel, coordinated to the color of the side C-stripe. Available exterior colors are Competition Orange, Performance White, Kona Blue Metallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic and Race Red.

Up front, a unique fascia and grille are highlighted by the blocked-off fog lamp openings and aggressive lower splitter, a version of the design used – and proven – on the Boss 302R race car. The front splitter is designed to function at high speeds by efficiently managing the air under and around the car. It helps to reduce underbody drag and front end lift while more effectively forcing air through the Boss-specific cooling system. At the rear of the car, the spoiler was chosen to complement the front aero treatment and minimize overall drag.

A dark metallic instrument panel finish, gauge cluster and door panel trim also differentiate Boss from the standard Mustang, while a black pool-cue shifter ball and “Powered by Ford” door sill plates further remind customers they’re in a special car.

The Boss interior gets an aural kick thanks to what’s been removed. Eleven pounds of sound-deadening material have been eliminated to let occupants further enjoy the intake, engine and exhaust note.

TOP ONSTAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE WAL-MART, HOME DEPOT, MCDONALDS, STARBUCKS AND TARGET

OnStar subscribers requested more than 2 million routes in July, a monthly record of direction-seeking blue button pushes. And what was the most often sought destination?

    The nearest Wal-Mart.

In fact, nearly 40,000 navigation requests routed subscribers to the retailer across the United States and Canada.

With more than 13 million points of interest from which to choose, the top 10 most-requested destinations in July were:

    1. Wal-Mart
    2. Holiday Inn
    3. Home Depot
    4. Walgreens
    5. Marriott
    6. McDonald’s
    7. Bank of America
    8. Starbucks
    9. Target
    10. Hampton Inn

OnStar’s Turn-by-Turn Navigation connects subscribers to a live advisor who finds the destination being sought and sends audio directions to the vehicle that are played through the stereo. Turn-by-Turn Navigation allows subscribers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road as they safely reach their destination.

OnStar eNav makes it easy to pre-plan travel. Subscribers can visit Google Maps or MapQuest to plan a trip and have destinations sent to their OnStar system. ESURANCE OFFERS GUIDE TO FINDING REPAIR SHOP LOVE

    1. PLAY THE FIELD. It’s a good idea to shop around before you have an emergency. An easy way to do this is to have regular maintenance performed at local repair shops. If a shop does a great job on an oil or tire change, chances are they’ll perform just as well on larger, more complex jobs. So do a little “dating” and remember what they say about first impressions. If you need a mechanic now, however, skip to step 2.

    2. GET SET UP. Ask friends and people you trust if they can recommend a good repair shop. As with most things, word of mouth is your best bet in finding a reliable auto tech. But if everyone you know happens to drive miraculously trouble-free vehicles, proceed to step 3.

    3. GO ONLINE. Search is magic. There are several online engines that can help you find a list of local shops. National Public Radio’s Car Talk (http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/find.html) offers a locator that helps you find local shops that meet your criteria. Just click on a shop name to see customer survey results and reviewer comments. You can also find mechanic reviews at MechanicRatingz (http://www.mechanicratingz.com/). Once you have a few shops to consider, move on to step 4.

    4. KNOW YOUR STUFF. Researching mechanics online isn't the most fun you can have in an afternoon (we know), but it could pay off. Check to see if a shop’s mechanics are registered with the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) (http://bit.ly/aTGSnl). Becoming ASE-certified involves a lot of experience and testing. The tests are notoriously difficult and staying certified requires a sizeable amount of industry know-how and expertise. (Tip: look for actual certificates, not just logos or patches.) You can also check to see if a repair shop’s registered with the Automotive Service Association (http://www.asashop.org/). While these affiliations don't necessarily guarantee quality, they're a darn good place to start.

    5. GET THE DIRT. Check with the Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/us/) to see if the shop you’re considering has had complaints. Because we love our cars, and because a bad experience with a mechanic can be infuriating and expensive, people tend to follow through on complaints of this nature more so than with say, an unpleasant exchange at the downtown coffee shop. Double check — if nothing pops up, that's a good sign.

    6. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. True, you’re not a mechanic, but you probably know more than you think. Look around. Is the place neat and ordered or does it look like your teenage brother's bedroom? Is the staff organized and helpful or about as friendly as a Parisian waiter? Good repair shops know that customer recommendations are key to a successful business, and they work hard to present a clean, friendly, and professional environment in which to keep customers happy.

    7. DRIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. Once you’ve found a reliable auto repair shop and a good mechanic, all that’s left is the honeymoon (so to speak). Be sure to keep their contact info handy for the next time and if you’ve had a great experience, don’t be shy. Sites such as MechanicRatingz (http://www.mechanicratingz.com/) make it easy to give feedback. And unlike love, when you find a good mechanic, it is OK to share.

CHEVROLET CRUZE ECO: HYBRID-LIKE FUEL EFFICIENCY WITHOUT THE PRICE TAG

At the New York Auto Show earlier this year, Chevrolet revealed the compact 2011 Cruze Eco. This high-efficiency model is powered by an Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with variable valve timing that achieves up to an estimated 40 mpg on the highway when combined with a six-speed manual transmission. City fuel economy, as well as estimates for the Cruze Eco equipped with an available six-speed automatic transmission, will be finalized closer to launch.

The Eco achieves greater fuel economy using a number of features that enhance its aerodynamics, minimize weight and reduce rolling resistance. Details include:

    * A lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow

    * The upper grille has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics

    * A lower front air dam extension, extensive use of underbody panels and a rear spoiler enhance aerodynamics

    * A lowered ride height improves aerodynamics

    * 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels

    * Ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires.

The axle ratio on the manual-transmission model is also optimized for fuel economy, while helping the car deliver confident performance. Chevrolet estimates the Cruze Eco will deliver 0-60 mph performance of about 10 seconds with the manual transmission and nine seconds with the six-speed automatic.

The Cruze Eco will be available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

    FORD EXPLORER HAS BEEN REINVENTED!

The all-new Ford Explorer was recently launched to its Facebook friends in a social media initiative, followed by reveal events throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The 2011 Explorer with V-6 power is expected to deliver more than 20 percent better fuel economy than the 2010 model. When equipped with the available 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-4 engine, Explorer fuel economy is expected to improve by more than 30 percent.

Driven by the commitment to give customers unsurpassed fuel efficiency with each new vehicle, Ford attacked every detail to transform Explorer with significantly improved fuel economy:

Twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT)

    Latest Ford EcoBoost engine

    Six-speed automatic transmissions

Electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) to significantly reduce parasitic power loss

    Intelligent four-wheel drive (4WD)

    Variable-displacement air-conditioning compressor

Optimized tires for reduced rolling resistance

Slippery aerodynamics with harmonized front air dam and rear lift gate spoiler

Explorer’s available advanced 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 delivers the power of a normally aspirated V-6 without compromising four-cylinder fuel economy. Aimed at the SUV buyer whose top priority is fuel economy, this turbocharged and intercooled I-4 engine delivers a projected 237 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 250 pounds-feet of torque from 1,700 through 4,000 rpm. The EcoBoost employs direct injection of gasoline, Ti-VCT, direct-acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) valve lifters and four valves per cylinder.

Explorer’s standard power train combines front-wheel drive with a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine, delivering an estimated 290 horsepower and 255 pounds-feet of torque. Ti-VCT allows individually optimized camshaft timing of valve opening and closing events to improve mechanical efficiency while delivering increased power and reducing part-throttle emissions. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, this powerful V-6 is projected to deliver more than 20 percent better fuel economy versus the previous Explorer V6 model.

Each Explorer engine is paired with a unique six-speed automatic transmission, combining lowered initial gears for improved off-the-line acceleration and higher gearing for improved efficiency at lower engine rpm when cruising.

Explorer V-6 models are available with an intelligent 4WD system that adds terrain management. Situation-selectable, this power train advancement takes the guesswork out of 4WD range choice.

A driver need only turn the console-mounted knob to the proper setting among snow, sand, mud and normal modes. This system also includes a hill descent mode.

    Standard convenience features include:

MyForddriver connect technology including 4.2-inch LCD screen

    MyKey owner control feature

    Air filtration system

    Media hub

Easy Fuel capless fuel filler system

    Cruise control

Power windows, with one-touch down for driver

Power door locks with child safety rear door locks

    Tilt/telescoping steering column

    Four 12-volt power points

    Cargo hooks

The 2011 Explorer will be assembled at Ford’s Chicago manufacturing facility. Production begins late this year, and Explorer will be available in dealerships in winter.

JEEP AND MOPAR TO OFFER OFF-ROAD CAMPER TRAILERS

Jeep and Mopar are setting up camp for off-road enthusiasts. They will be the first in the industry to offer customers off-road camper trailers.

Designed to meet off-road capabilities of Jeep 4x4 vehicles, Jeep Trail and Extreme Trail campers incorporate Jeep Wrangler’s rugged design cues, including Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels (with 5-lug by 5-inch bolt pattern to utilize most Jeep vehicles’ spare tire), taillights, fender flares, rear bumper (Trail Edition camper only), badging and hood-tie downs. In August, both Jeep camper trailers may be ordered at local Jeep dealers through Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand.

Jeep Trail Edition Camper for casual campers
The all-new Jeep Trail Edition camper is designed for the Jeep enthusiast looking to hit the trails with the family.

Unlike conventional recreational campers, the Jeep Trail Edition camper features an extensive use of lightweight tubular-aluminum construction (no wood or fiberboard materials) in order to mitigate the additional load on the Jeep tow vehicle and make operation a breeze.

The Jeep Trail Edition camper features Jeep Wrangler Rubicon’s 32-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires, which provide excellent traction and 12 inches of ground clearance. Underneath, a unique torsion-bar and trailing-arm suspension provide confident maneuvering and on-trail articulation. For protection, heavy-duty diamond-plated aluminum is strategically used to handle abuse from the elements.

Unfold the rugged diamond-plated aluminum top (capable of supporting 450 lbs of gear), and the Jeep Trail Edition camper reveals spacious living quarters with 76 inches of headroom and space to sleep up to four people. A comfortable multi-use sofa folds out into a bed, while a queen-sized bed provides maximum comfort for two adults. A built-in cabinet provides space for camping gear, while all-aluminum construction delivers a clean look and contributes to the camper’s lightweight design.

A stowable center table offers occupants a place for dining or a surface for board games, while a 110-volt power inverter provides additional cooking, heating, cooling and entertainment options. Enclosing the home-away-from-home are premium window screens and privacy shades.

Available accessories include Mopar’s black aluminum Jeep Wrangler taillight guards (P/N: 82209330, MSRP: $143) for even more legendary Jeep styling. In addition, an available 10-foot by 10-foot exterior awning with screen enclosure (P/N: LLROOM06, MSRP: $650) expands the Jeep Trail Edition camper’s covered space for additional all-weather enjoyment. Improving the standard 2-inch trailer-hitch ball is an available heavy-duty pintle hitch with a 360-degree rotating axis for maximum off-road maneuvering and on-trail articulation (P/N: LLHOOK02, MSRP: $735).

Starting with the Jeep Trail Edition camper’s off-road engineered suspension, the Jeep Extreme Trail Edition camper ups the ante with a heavy-duty frame, more ground clearance (15 inches) and a full-underbody skid plate. Larger 35-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires provide a beefier trail-ready aesthetic and sit below black diamond-plated aluminum fenders. These design fenders are mounted higher on the Jeep Extreme Trail Edition camper to accommodate up to 37-inch tires for maximum off-road capability. FORD RACING, TEAM O’NEIL DRIVING SCHOOL CREATE FIESTA RALLY SCHOOL

Last year, 100 European-spec Ford Fiestas arrived in North America for the Fiesta Movement. This summer, 43 of the Fiestas will receive a second life as Ford Racing teams up with Team O’Neil Rally School to create the Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience in Dalton, N.H.

The Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience is the only rally experience offered by a manufacturer in North America and will provide aspiring rally drivers with the opportunity to learn how to drive on a rally course in a Fiesta. The creation of the Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience is the latest addition to Ford’s racing experiences with the first being Ford Racing School of High Performance Driving at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.

For the Fiesta rally experience, Team O’Neil will modify each production front-wheel-drive Fiesta with a roll bar, rally suspension and off-road tires, and will then feature Fiesta in its Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience.

Fiesta will be incorporated into Team O’Neil’s one-day Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience and two-day Ford Racing Rally School. The classes will introduce students to the fine art of driving a rally car. Aspiring rally drivers learn the left-foot braking technique pro drivers use, and the braking, steering and throttle techniques that allow drivers to slide through corners under control. Beginner students get a chance to ride at “maximum attack” with a Team O’Neil driving instructor on real rally roads, while more advanced students get an opportunity to drive in rally conditions. Additionally, students will have a chance to be in the car as Team O’Neil instructors demonstrate the exciting “Scandinavian flick” or pendulum turn.

The cost per student for the one-day Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience is $495, which includes a short classroom session on vehicle dynamics, safety, balance and car control. Most of the day will be spent driving on either the skid pad or slalom course, practicing the techniques of car control rally driving on gravel conditions in a rally-prepared Ford Racing Fiesta.

For more information on Ford Racing Fiesta Rally Experience and to register, visit www.teamoneil.com or call the school at (603) 444-4488 or email info@teamoneil.com

2011 FORD SHELBY GT500 IN HIGH DEMAND, RAPIDLY APPROACHING PRODUCTION LIMIT

Customer demand for Ford’s new 2011 Shelby GT500 is growing nearly as fast as the world’s fastest production pony car. More than 3,300 orders have been placed for the new Shelby GT500. To ensure exclusivity, U.S. sales of the 2011 Shelby GT500 will be limited to 5,500 units.

The 2011 Shelby GT500 is powered by a new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine, which produces 550 horsepower and 510 pounds-feet of torque, a 10 horsepower increase over the 2010 model. The engine is 102 pounds lighter than its predecessor, delivering a better power-to-weight ratio, improved fuel economy, acceleration, handling and steering precision.

The engine uses a state-of-the-art Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) liner coating, a process that applies a 150-micron composite coating that contains nanoparticles on the internal surfaces of engine cylinder bores, replacing cast-iron liners typically used in aluminum engine blocks. The Intellectual Property Owners Education Foundation honored the inventors of the Ford-patented PTWA technology with the 2009 National Inventor of the Year Award.

Customers are showing an appreciation for the GT500’s performance on and off the track, as well as its many features.

Standard 2011 performance features include the 550-hp aluminum 5.4-liter V8 engine, a new 2.75-inch exhaust system, revised brake cooling and pedal box construction for more consistent brake pedal efforts and feel, and electric power-assisted steering (EPAS). SVT worked hard to make EPAS better than the outgoing hydraulic steering system, with improved torque build-up and road feel.

New for 2011 is an optional glass roof providing customers with yet another open-air option that does not compromise the coupe’s versatility, headroom or climate-controlled environment. Three times more 2011 GT500s have been ordered with the glass roof compared to the base Mustang showing the popularity of this new feature.

Interior options have proven immensely popular, with almost 70 percent of the GT500s ordered with the Electronics Package, which includes voice-activated navigation, SIRIUS Travel Link, HD Radio and dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control.

The new SVT Performance Package is also proving to be a popular option with just over 68 percent of coupe orders selecting the enhanced performance delivered through this all-new option. The package was developed to provide track performance. SVT engineers worked directly with Goodyear to develop all-new Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires that give this already great handling car supercar grip and control levels. The optional package also offers unique styling, staggered lighter wheels with 19-inch fronts and 20-inch rears, a numerically higher rear axle ratio, stiffer springs and dampers, and a lowered ride height. The SVT Performance Package is available on both the coupe and convertible.

Other standard items new for 2011 include high-intensity discharge headlamps, MyKey programmable vehicle key, integrated spotter mirror and fold-down rear headrests.

BUILD YOUR OWN ENGINE OPTION OFFERED TO CORVETTE ENTHUSIASTS

For enthusiasts who want to be personally involved in creating their Corvette, Chevrolet’s new Corvette Engine Build Experience allows them to literally build the engine for their new car.

In what is believed to be the world’s most hands-on super car program, customers who order a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 can choose an option to help assemble their cars’ LS7 or LS9 engines at General Motors’ Performance Build Center (PBC) in Wixom, Mich.

In addition to building their own engines, Corvette buyers can attend driving school in Arizona or Nevada, take delivery of their vehicles at the National Corvette Museum or watch their vehicles being built at the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Engine Build Experience is an option with a suggested retail price of $5,800. When a customer selects the PBC option for a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 and the dealer submits the order to Chevrolet, a special concierge contacts the customer to verify participation and help coordinate arrangements. While travel arrangements to and from Metro Detroit are the customer’s responsibility, the Chevrolet concierge helps schedule the engine build; coordinates the customer’s activities at the Performance Build Center; assists with booking local lodging and meals, and arranges local transportation.

At the PBC, the customer doesn’t merely view the engine’s assembly; he or she builds it under the supervision of and support from skilled technicians. When the engine is assembled, a personalized nameplate is added to the engine next to the builder’s name. It is then sent to the Corvette assembly plant for installation in the customer’s car.

The Corvette Engine Build Experience is possible because of the hand-assembly processes used at the 100,000-square-foot PBC. Technicians hand-build the Corvette Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine, the Corvette ZR1’s 6.2L supercharged LS9 engine and a variation of the Corvette Grand Sport’s LS3 6.2L engine. The PBC incorporates the best practices of low-volume niche manufacturers and the established quality and manufacturing standards at GM to ensure the highest-quality specialized engines.

Like all engines assembled at the PBC, Engine Build Experience engines are covered by Chevrolet’s five year / 100,000-mile transferable power train warranty.

BUGATTI VEYRON SUPER SPORT ACHIEVES NEW LAND SPEED WORLD RECORD

Bugatti’s Official Pilot, Pierre Henri Raphanel, puts his helmet and gloves on, pulls the safety belts tight while the engineers check the car a very last time: tire pressure, temperature, all systems green. Then the orange black Super Sport crosses the light barrier, from now on the time will be taken, within one hour the car has to drive from South to North and then in the opposite direction. No one but the driver is allowed to touch the car during this time. The tension rises. A few minutes later, we can hear from the left side the sound of a starting jumbo jet coming closer towards us. First, we perceive the headlights of the Veyron; then we can recognize the shape of the car, a loud wooosh …. and Raphanel dashes in top speed past us. The GPS-tachometer stops at 266.1 mph. Now, the same procedure from the opposite direction. This time, the car reaches 270.03 mph. As average top speed the representatives of the “TÜV”and Guinness generate a value of 268 mph. This even hit Bugatti’s engineering team by surprise.

The climax of the Veyron series: the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

Had a model been especially popular or highly successful in races, Ettore Bugatti’s customers often pushed the master to tease out of the engine a few horsepower more for their future car. Bugatti Automobiles SAS had been in a similar situation when their existing customers asked the company to not only design their second model optically differently but to also create a version with a sportier and even more extreme driving experience. The result is a car with a uniquely high performance of 1,200-hp (882 kW) offering experienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a maximum torque of 1,500 Newton meters and a  limited top speed of 415 km/h (to protect the tires) but, the technique of the Super Sport is identical to the record car. The first five Super Sports to come off the production line will constitute a special series of their own, with the same configuration as the land speed record car.

The Super Sport is a consequent further development of the classic exclusive 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4, launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in bends and excellent stability when braking and accelerating.

Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead to constantly new conclusions, which enabled the engineers at Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a direction in which the driver can reach new dimensions. Every modification is designed to produce an even more powerful car for an agile ride. Four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers have been used to boost the power of the 16-cylinder engine, and the chassis has been extensively redesigned to maintain safety at extreme speed. Thanks to slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilizers, and new shock absorbers with a complex architecture originally developed for racing cars. This gives noticeably more precise control of the wheels and the car as a whole. With lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 G and improved interaction between the tires and the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super Sport offers perfect handling and even more powerful acceleration of 1,500 Newton meters on corner exits.

The body has been fine-tuned to improve aerodynamic efficiency and maintain perfect balance in every situation, while the new fiber structure of the all-carbon monocoque ensures maximum torsion rigidity and passive safety – at reduced weight.  The skin is made entirely of carbon-fiber composites, and the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is available in 100 per-cent clear-lacquered exposed carbon on request.

    Dynamic exterior

Every detail of this car, and not just its use of advanced motor sport technology, harks back to the pioneering spirit of company founder Ettore Bugatti. This brilliant designer came from a family of artists, and his philosophy was always to combine mechanical perfection and exterior beauty. This ethos remains alive and well at the company, and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is wholly unmistakable, with every external modification serving to coax greater performance from the car.

The Super Sport’s flat, elongated silhouette is immediately recognizable. The 16-cylinder engine gets its air from two NACA ducts set into the roof, rather than from scoops above the engine. The front air intakes have been expanded and reshaped, with the lower one extending elegantly around the sides to the wheel arch. The revised back looks sportier due to the double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system.

Bugatti has a tradition of making super-sport versions of successful models, usually with racing chassis and supercharged engines. These cars were considered as true racing machines for diehard Bugatti devotees. The most successful were the type 55 and type 57S; only around 40 of each were built.

Bugatti Automobiles has sold 260 Veyron and 35 Grand Sport by now, of which 249 Veyron and 22 Grand Sport had been delivered. The Super Sport will begin production this autumn at Molsheim along with the Veyron and the Grand Sport. The first five cars – known as the World Record Edition – are in a special black exposed carbon and orange finish and have already been sold.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport will appear for the first time in public in California at the Pebble Beach Concours weekend in mid-August and will be featured at The Quail, Monterey Historic Races at Laguna Seca and on the concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

WITH SUMMER DRIVING HEATING UP, CARMAX PROVIDES TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR GAS MILEAGE

This summer season, the family road trip will average more than eight hours in driving time, according to a recent CarMax survey – that means filling up the gas tank more than once, especially if you're driving a minivan or SUV. CarMax Inc., a retailer of used cars, wants to help you make the most of the dollars you spend at the pump with some helpful tips before you hit the road.

CarMax technicians recommend the following fuel-sipping tips:

    1. Drive efficiently

    * Drive the speed limit: gas mileage decreases at higher speeds.

    * Don't drive aggressively: speeding, quick acceleration and excessive braking waste gas. Driving aggressively lowers gas mileage both on the highway and when driving around town.

    * Use overdrive and cruise control: If your vehicle has a manual overdrive, make sure it is on; overdrive reduces engine speed, which helps to save gas. Cruise control also saves gas by maintaining a consistent speed.

    * Avoid idling: idling for longer than 30 seconds uses more gas than starting up your engine.

    2. Maintain your vehicle

    * Get the manufacturer's recommended maintenance done: keeping your car in shape improves gas mileage.

    * Make sure your tires are filled to the correct pressure: this can increase gas mileage by three percent. Always refer to the manufacturer's specifications.

    * Whenever possible, use synthetic oil: look for “Energy Conserving” motor oil; it will reduce friction and increase fuel economy.

    * Check and replace dirty air filters: clogged filters can decrease gas mileage up to 10 percent.

    3. Plan ahead

    * Combine errands: this will save time, money and gas.

    * Remove excess weight: excess weight in the cab or trunk can reduce mileage. Every extra 100 pounds reduces fuel economy by about 2 percent.

    * Eliminate excess wind resistance: roof racks and carrier crates on the top of the car create drag or wind resistance. Removing these items can increase fuel economy by about five percent.

    * Use air conditioning when traveling at highway speeds: driving with the windows open uses more fuel due to the increased drag.

    * Fill up your car in the morning: early morning is the best time because the gasoline is cooler and denser. Since gas pumps measure volumes of gas and not densities, you get more fuel for your money.

UNATTENDED KIDS IN HOT CARS A LETHAL COMBINATION

The arrival of summer is a reminder of a seasonal danger that takes dozens of young lives annually – children being left unattended in hot cars.

In the seven days from June 13-20, seven children around the country died of hyperthermia after being left in a hot car or after playing in one and being trapped inside.

According to research by Jan Null, a Certified Consulting Meteorologist who spent 25 years with the National Weather Service, 462 children – an average of 37 per year – have died after being left in hot cars since 1998.

“There just isn’t that much change in this from year to year,” Null said. “That’s probably because when these incidents happen, they are infrequent in a given community.”

In fact, the 17 known deaths through June 22 occurred in 10 different states. There were six in Texas, two in Missouri and two in Tennessee. Despite being one of 15 states with a law against leaving children unattended in vehicles, Texas has the most cumulative deaths by far – 64. The next closest is Florida with 50 recorded deaths. Only four of 50 states have no recorded cases.

Chevrolet, General Motors and Safe Kids USA continue to promote education and awareness through the Never Leave Your Child Alone program.

“A child’s core body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s, making them more susceptible to heat stroke – even on a day with mild temperatures,” said Lorrie Walker, training manager and technical advisor for Safe Kids USA. “Our goal is to raise awareness of just how dangerous it is to leave a child unattended in a vehicle, as well as to remind parents and caregivers of important safety precautions they can take to avoid this preventable tragedy.”

GM and Safe Kids USA urge all adults to take the following steps:

Call 911 if they see a child unattended in a vehicle.

Never leave children alone in a vehicle – even for a minute.

Set your cell phone or Blackberry reminder to be sure you drop your child off at daycare.

Place a cell phone, PDA, purse, briefcase, gym bag or whatever is to be carried from the car on the floor in front of the child in a back seat.  This forces the adult to open the back door and observe the child before leaving.

Set your computer “Outlook” program to ask you, “Did you drop off at daycare today?”

Have a plan with your child care provider to call if your child does not arrive when expected.

Check cars and trunks first if a child goes missing.

“We have looked at a range of technologies to provide a warning to drivers that a sleeping infant or young child might be in the back seat, but we are convinced more than ever that this issue is best addressed by education and awareness,” GM executive director of Safety Jeff Boyer said.

    Null agrees.

“Keeping that message in front of the public, especially when temperatures are normal or just above normal, is critically important,” he said. “We don’t see as much of this when temperatures are really high.”

The majority of child hyperthermia cases (51 percent) are caused by children being accidentally left behind. About 30 percent are unattended children who find their way into an unlocked vehicle and are overcome by heat and 18 percent are cases where parents or caregivers knowingly leave a child unattended.

The atmosphere and the windows of a car are relatively “transparent” to the sun’s shortwave radiation and are warmed little. However, this shortwave energy does heat objects that it strikes. For example, a dark dashboard or car seat can easily reach temperatures of 180 to more than 200 degrees F.

Objects such as a dashboard, steering wheel and child seat heat the adjacent air by conduction and convection and also give off long-wave radiation, which rapidly warms the air trapped inside a vehicle.

That heating can occur rapidly. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise 19 degrees in just 10 minutes and 45 to 50 degrees in one to two hours. Heat stroke can occur when the body temperature reaches 104 F and core body temperature of 107 degrees F is considered lethal as cells are damaged and internal organs shut down.

4,400 CHEVROLET VOLT OWNERS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR FREE HOME CHARGING STATIONS

The first buyers of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be eligible for one of 4,400 free home charging stations. The program will provide Volt owners with a 240-volt charge station from either ECOtality Inc. or Coulomb Technologies. In many cases, it will include the cost of home installation. The projects are made possible with a grant of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the Transportation Electrification Initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

“Many owners will plug their Volt into a normal 120-volt electrical outlet, charge overnight and drive to work in the morning using only battery power,” said Tony DiSalle, Product and Marketing director for the Chevrolet Volt. “For Volt owners who want to install a faster 240-volt charge station, we expect the Department of Energy project to save $1,000 and $2,000.”

The U.S. Department of Energy projects were established with two objectives: installing charging stations in residential, workplace and public areas to encourage consumers to purchase electric vehicles; and studying electric vehicle usage to optimize future electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

To encourage consumer purchases of electric vehicles, federal grants and other funds have been awarded to install more than 15,000 home charge stations. That total includes 4,400 home charge stations for Volt owners; 2,600 as part of The EV Project from ECOtality, and 1,800 as part of the ChargePoint America project from Coulomb Technologies.

To study electric vehicle usage, the programs will collect data such as average charge time, energy usage and the starting and ending time of the charging process. This data will be analyzed by the U.S. Department of Energy to understand how electric vehicles are driven, how and when they are charged, and ultimately what is required for widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

“In addition to saving money, these projects offer Volt owners an opportunity to play a role in developing our collective understating of electric vehicles in the market,” DiSalle said.

At the time of purchase, Volt buyers will receive a portable 120-volt charge cord, and will have the option of installing a 240-volt charge station available from Chevrolet. Volt buyers that live within the program cities may apply for a free 240-volt home charging station through the Coulomb or ECOtality programs if they are willing to share their charging information. Additional consumer information on eligibility requirements and the application process will be available when the Volt goes on sale later this year.

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended range capability, designed to drive up to 350 miles without stopping to recharge or refuel. For the first 40 miles, Volt is powered by pure electricity, without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery is depleted, a gasoline-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles.

CAR WASHING THE GREEN WAY; FORD OFFERS TIPS ON MAKING YOUR CAR WASH ECO-FRIENDLY

As the summer season gets underway, millions of Americans will have “Wash the Car” on their weekend to-do lists. Before you pull out the buckets, sponges, soaps and sprayers, Ford Motor Co. has a few tips for making your car clean and your car wash green.

Turf job: When washing your car at home, take the chore off the driveway and on to your lawn. Not only will you get your car clean, but you will water the grass as well.

Save it when you spray it: Americans waste gallons of water by leaving their hoses on during car washes. Before you make your vehicle squeaky clean, buy a water-saving hose nozzle to shut off the flow of water when you aren’t spraying your car.

Don’t kick the bucket: Give your car a quick rinse with the hose and then fill a bucket with water and suds. Use the bucket with soapy water to wash the car, allowing you to save gallons of water during the cleaning process. Use your hose to rinse the car clean.

Grab the rag: Before you get out the paper towels to dry your car, consider using a clean rag or a micro-fiber towel. Either will get the job done better and can be used repeatedly throughout the summer.

Go pro: While you can save money washing your own car at home, the most environmentally-friendly way to get your vehicle clean may be using a car wash. The International Carwash Association reports that automatic car washes use less than half the water of even the most careful home car washer. According to one report, washing a car at home typically uses between 80 and 140 gallons of water, while a commercial car wash averages less than 45 gallons per car.

However you clean your car, Ford encourages you to do it in the most environmentally friendly way possible. For more information on Ford’s environmental initiatives, visit www.ford.com/go/sustainability

    SAY GOODBYE TO MERCURY!

Ford Motor Co. will expand and enhance its Lincoln brand lineup with seven all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles in the next four years as part of an aggressive growth plan focused on standout product design, class-leading technology and new power trains – all aimed at competing with Cadillac and Lexus in North America.

Ford also will end production of Mercury vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year to fully devote its financial, product development, production and marketing, sales and service resources toward further growing its core Ford brand while enhancing the Lincoln brand.

    Foundation set
The future of Lincoln is building from a strong base that includes the all-new flagship MKS large sedan, the all-new MKT seven-passenger crossover and a significantly refreshed MKZ mid-size sedan – all now in showrooms. The hybrid version of the MKZ will reach showrooms later this year and is expected to be the most fuel-efficient premium sedan on the market.

Lincoln’s product actions continue later this year with the debut of the significantly refreshed 2011 MKX crossover, the first vehicle to feature MyLincoln Touch driver connect technology.

This will be followed by another six all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles within four years developed with Lincoln’s DNA of standout design, precise and confident driving experience, class-leading technology and power trains delivering top performance and fuel efficiency.

    Plans for Lincoln include:

    Lincoln’s first-ever C-segment vehicle;

    New Lincoln-exclusive power trains, including an all-new V-6 engine and advanced fuel-efficient transmissions;

EcoBoost engines available in all Lincolns – from the Navigator full-size SUV to the new C-segment Lincoln.

    Mercury
Mercury originally was created as a premium offering to Ford and was an important source of incremental sales. However, the continued strength of the Ford brand – particularly during the past three years – has accelerated the migration from Mercury to Ford for many customers.

Today, Mercury’s customer profile, pricing and margins are almost identical to Ford, but Mercury’s incremental sales have been declining.

The majority of current Mercury sales are to fleet buyers and customers purchasing through employee, retiree and friends and family discounts, which Ford anticipates largely can be satisfied by Ford brand vehicles.

Of Ford Motor Co.’s 16 percent market share in the U.S., Mercury accounts for 0.8 percentage points, a level that has been flat or declining for the past several years. That contrasts with the Ford brand, which has increased market share by 2.2 percentage points so far this year on the strength of new products and improved quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value.

Ford’s strengthening financial position – including the return to profitability and positive cash flow – allows the company to absorb short-term costs associated with the discontinuation of Mercury and to consolidate future product investments into Lincoln.

Today, there are no stand-alone Mercury dealerships in North America. Ford is working closely with dealers to maintain properly located stand-alone Lincoln or Ford-Lincoln dealers, which will offer dealers and the company the greatest opportunity for long-term profitable growth.

BUBBLES, FLOWERS AND FLAMES: NEW FORD WEB SITE LETS CUSTOMERS CUSTOMIZE THEIR VEHICLES

A new Web site is making it easy, cost-effective and fun for Ford owners to turn their car or truck into a unique personalized ride with vinyl graphics that offer the look of a custom paint job at half the price.

The Web site – www.fordcustomgraphics.com – launched in November with vinyl wrap designs for the new Ford Fiesta is now expanding to include graphics for two of the most customized cars in the country – the Ford Mustang and F-150 – and later will offer customization options for all Ford vehicles.

All it takes is a few clicks of a computer mouse.

About 50 designs were created specifically for each vehicle. All are available in a variety of colors and sizes and were designed with the target customer in mind.

People interested in the hip, new Ford Fiesta, for example, can choose from cool, fun designs like bubbles, arrows, dots and flowers. Mustang and F-150 customers will have an entirely different portfolio to choose from.

Ford Custom Graphics: The look of custom paint at half the cost

Ford Custom Graphics offers customers the look of custom-painted designs, but without the expensive price tag, according to Tom Stemple, chief executive officer of Original Wraps, Inc., a provider of “on-demand” custom graphics to the automotive industry and the company that developed the website for Ford.

“Vinyl wraps are typically half the cost of custom paint work,” he said. “Another advantage is that they can be easily removed if the customer wants a new design or decides to sell the vehicle. Paint is permanent, and custom-painted vehicles are often much more difficult to resell.”

In addition, all of the custom graphics feature 3M Scotchprint On-Demand quality vinyl. They are professionally installed at Ford dealerships and include a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty.

Vehicle personalization: Have it your way
Forty years ago, if you wanted to personalize your vehicle you hung a pair of fuzzy dice from the rearview mirror or slapped a trendy sticker on your bumper. Today, the automotive aftermarket has grown into a $31.85 billion industry and includes everything from grilles and custom body kits to interior accents and performance parts.

With cool products – such as custom graphics and a variety of other vehicle accessories – Ford is aiming at a larger slice of the aftermarket pie.

According to Sheryl Connelly, manager of Ford Global Trends and Futuring, the growing interest in vehicle personalization mirrors a broader societal trend.

“The one-size-fits-all model isn’t really relevant to today’s consumers, and it’s not necessarily a desire to stand out from the crowd. It’s more a desire not to be lost in the masses,” she said. “People are personalizing everything – cell phones, computers and clothing – and it’s no different with automobiles.”

    WHAT’S NEW

    EMERGENCY WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADE LAUNCHED

Jamak Fabrication (www.jamak.com) has introduced the E-BLADE, a portable emergency wiper blade that installs in seconds and fits most standard automobiles. Its purpose is to help those in an emergency situation when their blade decides to give up.

Despite National Highway Transportation Board recommendations that drivers change their wiper blades every year, the average vehicle owner replaces his/her wiper blades only once every 2.5 years. Typically, a worn blade shows physical wear signs such as cracking.

The blade fits most wipers from 18 inches up to 24 inches and is made of synthetic, durable rubber. It takes just seconds to install with four steps: measure, snap, trim and install.

Priced at $9.99, the E-BLADE is available at www.TheWiperStore.com or call 1-800-517-7600.

    NEW DODGE LOGO? YOU BET!

As the Dodge brand redefines itself with new lifestyle packages, new ads, events and sponsorships, and a slew of upcoming new products, it’s using its brand name to send a clear message that its “forever young” attitude and performance-driven history will drive the brand into the future.

The new Dodge brand logo features the DODGE name with a pair of red racing stripes relative to the “E,” suggesting speed and agility. Dodge designers sketched the new logo after Dodge and Ram Truck were clearly defined as separate brands with their own identities and consumers, each needing a logo that represents the character of the brand.

The twin-red graphic stripes will be used in communications, advertising, Internet and merchandising. They will not appear on Dodge products or on the dealership signage.

FORD OFFERS TIPS TO BRING YOUR CLASSIC CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE

                                                                            Story provided by Ford

It’s that time of year when car shows and cruise events are popping up all over and you’re itching to get your classic car out of storage and ready to shine. Here are some tips from Ford Motor Co. to help show you the best way to get your car ready for cruising season.

First things first: Assuming your car was stored with a full tank of gas and fuel stabilizer, you can skip this step. If not, you must drain the old gas and replace with new.

Spots give it away: Look under the car. If there was a problem, spots on the ground would be a giveaway. Color or location of the spill is helpful in finding out where the leak is coming from.

    * Red fluid usually indicates the transmission is leaking

    * Green-blue fluid means the radiator might be leaking

    * Oil on the floor under the front seal indicates your oil seals should be checked

    * Brake fluid under the master cylinder indicates a brake issue

Pop the top: Once you’ve inspected the floor, pop the hood. You’ll then want to check the wiper fluid, brake fluid, radiator fluid and oil. The oil should be down as low as it can go; the brake fluid should be high. If the brake fluid is dark brown, that’s an indication it’s dirty and needs to be changed, or the brakes need to be bled. With the hood still up, check the hoses:

    * Pinch the heater hoses to ensure they don’t show cracking or hardness

    * Squeeze the radiator hoses to make sure they haven’t rotted

    * Check the fan belts – try twisting them left and right to check for cracking

If the antifreeze hasn’t been changed in the last 24 months, this is the time to do it. Also, as the car has been sitting for months, change the oil and filter.

Spark it: If your car has been stored for more than four months, next on the list is to remove the spark plugs. Be sure to mark the order when removing. Then spray oil into the cylinder walls, lubricating them so when you start the car, the walls won’t get scratched.

Fully charged: Place the fully charged battery back in the car. The ideal way to store a battery is outside the car, somewhere off the ground where it’s not cold.

Get it started: Now comes the fun part – put the key in and turn the engine over until the oil heats to temperature. Then put the spark plugs back in place. Once that’s completed, get back in and start it up. After checking all lights and the brake pedal, back out of the driveway and take it for a loop around the block. Listen for squeaks or rattles. You will also want to check the defroster, fan, heater and radio to make sure everything is in working condition.

Shiny clean: If you don’t see any problems park it in the driveway and give the car a thorough cleaning – wash and vacuum the interior, remove and clean floor mats, shine the windows and wax the car.

Sit back and cruise: After putting air in the tires, you’re officially ready to head off to the first car show of the season to show off all your hard work. Enjoy!

TOW, TOW, TOW YOUR BOAT EASILY WITH 2011 FORD SUPER DUTY

                                                                                        Story provided by Ford

Whether heading to a demanding job site or a relaxing day at the lake, 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty customers can take advantage of segment-first technologies and conveniences to tow like a pro.

With vacation season approaching, more Super Duty customers will start towing boats, horse trailers and campers, all of which are among the top items towed by F-250 and F-350 customers. The ability to tow a camper, fifth-wheel, RV or bigger camper also rates highest among both conventional and fifth-wheel towers in terms of reasons for wanting maximum towing capacity.

Trailer Sway Control added for 2011
Leading these new technologies is Trailer Sway Control, which uses Ford’s AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control) to provide an additional level of confidence and control while towing. Ford’s system – standard on all single-rear wheel models and dual-rear wheel pickups – uses sensors to measure wheel speed, throttle position, steering wheel angle, yaw rate and lateral acceleration as well as an exclusive gyroscopic roll-rate sensor.

The roll-rate sensor is the key to the Ford system. Unlike competitors’ systems, TSC uses real-time input instead of calculations to take countermeasures.

When the system detects the trailer yawing in one direction, it applies selective brake pressure on the tow vehicle’s opposite side – called asymmetric braking. This helps reduce the sway. TSC also can reduce engine power as part of the trailer-sway mitigation strategy. TSC is designed to work even when trailers have no braking systems, requires no hardware to be added or adapted to the trailer, works with multiple trailer brake configurations and can assist when trailer sway occurs due to operation in gusty wind conditions or emergency evasive maneuvers.

Normal braking is proportional to driver brake pressure for smooth stops at all speeds. If the vehicle’s Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is engaged, the special trailer brake algorithm kicks in to minimize the potential for trailer wheel lockup. When towing trailers with electric brakes, Super Duty trucks equipped with the trailer brake controller can apply the brakes during a sway event to help stabilize it.

The Super Duty also offers a factory-installed trailer brake controller that is compatible with most aftermarket electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake systems. Electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake systems use an electric signal to actuate the hydraulic or “surge” brakes in the trailer. These systems are gaining in popularity among boat trailer manufacturers because they can be operated in a wet environment.

New engine and transmission deliver class-leading capability with control
The Super Duty is equipped with an all-new Ford-designed, engineered and built 6.7-liter V-8 turbocharged diesel engine. Its integrated exhaust brake increases engine exhaust back pressure when needed to help slow the vehicle and trailer while in tow/haul mode.

There’s no button to push; the diesel power train calibration automatically increases the engine exhaust back pressure when needed, making it seamless to the customer.

The all-new 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission has SelectShift capability and several enhanced customer-driven features, like Progressive Range Select, Manual Mode and tow/haul mode that are useful when towing.

Progressive Range Select allows a customer, through a toggle on the shift lever, to reduce the range of gears while in Drive. When the customer “taps” down into Range Select mode by pressing the toggle switch on the shift lever, the display shows the gears available for the transmission to shift to, and also continuously updates the current transmission gear.

Customers also can switch to Manual Mode and use the same shift toggle to select the gear desired. The torque converter aggressively locks up while in this manual mode and holds the gear to provide manual transmission-like control, yet is smart enough to downshift if the driver comes to a stop and forgets to downshift.

The enhanced tow/haul mode provides better control when hauling a heavy trailer load, especially when going down grades. The improved system uses an array of sophisticated electronic sensors that better predict the driver’s need for a downshift to provide engine braking and enhanced control. Manual Mode delivers greater control when low gears are needed, like pulling a trailer out of a boat ramp.

Another significant control strategy is Hill Start Assist, which is a sensor-based system that will hold the brakes for up to 2.5 seconds to prevent rollback when stopping or starting from rest on an incline. The system employs a digital accelerometer to measure slope incline and activates automatically when the incline exceeds 3 percent.

A FORD NAMED ‘PORKCHOP’: OWNERS ARE SHOWING THEIR LOVE WITH TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

                                                                            Story provided by Ford

For many Ford customers, a car or truck is much more than transportation – it’s a part of the family – and it deserves a special name. A recent Facebook query on Ford Motor Company’s fan page proved just how devoted – and creative – Ford owners are when it comes to giving their vehicles pet names.

Color, size, power and personality inspired a lot of nicknames, including Black Beauty, Big Red, Silver Bullet, Danger Ranger and The Beast. Owners also liked sweet and simple monikers, such as Ruby, Sally and Molly.

A few got really creative. “We named my new Taurus The Baby,” wrote one fan. “Because we treat it with love like a baby.” Another Ford owner was equally enthusiastic. “We named the Ford Focus we got earlier this year Mick, after Mick Jagger. The tune ‘Start Me Up’ – ‘If you start me up I’ll never stop’ – came to mind with the great gas mileage the car gets.”

And while Fords are part of the family, they seem to have little in common with what parents are naming their progeny these days. In 2009, according to parenting.com, the most popular baby names were Aiden, Jayden, Max, Riley and Liam for boys and Ella, Ava, Grace, Lolita and Emma for girls.

The only overlap, according to Ford’s unscientific study? Grace.

There were plenty of other female names on the Ford list: Bessie, Pearl, Blanche and Betty were mentioned, as were Myrtle, Miki, Marilyn and Big Bertha. Lots of Mustangs were named Sally and more than a few had the name Eleanor, inspired by the film “Gone in 60 Seconds.” There’s even a Mona Lisa, after Marisa Tomei’s character in “My Cousin Vinny.”

Men shouldn’t feel left out, though. There are Ford trucks out there named Hank, and quite a few Big Reds. There’s a Walter, an Oliver and a Santana, and even an Oscar and a Grover from Sesame Street fame. There’s a Mr. T. and a Black Knight, a Hoss and even a Porkchop – although that could go either way, gender-wise.

Some owners are openly sentimental: “I named my 1999 Taurus Stephanie, for the first girl I fell in love with,” wrote one. Another vehicle got the name Glenice, after a late grandmother. And more than a few went with Clara Jane, after Henry Ford’s wife.

But when it came to choosing their favorite nickname in a poll, Ford owners bowed to creativity. Omnitron, a 2005 Mustang, came out on top among all the Facebook entries. Cookie Monster, a 2010 blue F-150 SVT Raptor, was the runner-up.

Customers will receive a stored value debit card, ranging in value from $280 to $442, which can be used for fuel purchases. The amount of each stored value gas card is determined by several factors, including an assumed three-month timeframe for summer driving, the car’s EPA estimated highway mpg, the Federal Highway Administration’s estimated average of 1,000 miles driven per month and the U.S. national average price of one gallon of regular gasoline as determined by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

FORD START WINS AUTOWEEK’S BEST CONCEPT

                                                    Story provided by Ford

The stunning red Ford Start pulled ahead of 65 concept vehicles to be named Best Concept by the AutoWeek editorial staff at the Beijing auto show this year.

Small, green, smart and fun, the Ford Start won admirers for its decidedly playful take on kinetic design. More than a design exploration into the feasibility of a future small car, it previews the smallest engine yet in the growing Ford EcoBoost engine family. Ford has confirmed that the 1.0-litre turbocharged I3 EcoBoost engine powering the Start is going into production, destined for use in future Ford small cars, where it is expected to deliver the same power as a larger petrol I4.

Describing the Ford Start as “the kind of concept we can wholeheartedly embrace”, AutoWeek journalists gave the nifty package a ready thumbs up.

“Great design for such a small car, and innovative use of Ford's EcoBoost technology with an I3 engine,” said Roger Hart, AutoWeek’s executive editor.

Inspired in part by a growing global trend towards mega cities, the Start is Ford’s journey into solutions and ideas for the future.

“With the Ford Start Concept, we didn’t set out to design some sort of utilitarian concept to save the world, nor were we interested in following the competitive trend toward an overly noisy design language,” said J Mays, group vice president Design and chief creative officer, Ford Motor Company. “What we did set out to do was design a personality-driven car that exudes warmth, charm and aspiration…to design a car worth bonding with.”

FORD LAUNCHES ‘OPERATION DRIVE ONE’; TOUR TO SALUTE TROOPS AND SUPPORT MILITARY CHARITY

    Story provided by Ford

Ford has launched “Operation Drive one” to honor the men and women of the armed forces while raising money for one of the largest United States military charities.

Ford, a longtime supporter of the military, will salute military personnel, veterans, family and friends with a 10-base national tour designed to provide a fun-filled day of entertainment, including driving challenges, interactive vehicle displays of Ford's newest products and technologies and classic car shows, all while raising money for the National Military Family Association.

Each “Ford: Operation Drive one” tour stop includes “Drive one 4 UR Troops,” a test drive program that allows individuals to test drive any new Ford vehicle and help raise money to support the troops and their families. For each test drive taken at the event, $20 (up to $10,000) will be donated to the local chapter of the National Military Family Association (NMFA).

“Ford: Operation Drive one” will include experiential displays that demonstrate Ford's class-leading fuel economy, quality, safety and technology features. A precision driving course will allow consumers to get behind the wheel of a new 2011 Ford Mustang or 2011 Ford Fiesta to race against the clock, while a burnout challenge will be sure to leave faces smiling. Interactive vehicle displays, children's activities and a car show with local enthusiast clubs will round out the experience.

Former wrestling champion and actor Bill Goldberg will join the tour and make an appearance at each stop. Goldberg, a reality television star most recently on NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice, will participate in a meet and greet at each of the bases joined by his rare 1970 Boss 429 Lawman Mustang. Goldberg has been a longtime military supporter, donating both his time and talent to raise money for military charities.

Additionally, Ford will salute eight randomly-selected active duty and veteran service members with a trip to the Ford Championship NASCAR race weekend in November. From those eight, two recipients will also win a new 2011 Ford Mustang and one grand prize winner will be awarded an exclusive Toby Keith concert for his or her home base. All current and former members of the military can enter to win at any of the tour stops or at www.fordoperationdriveone.com

    WHAT’S NEW

AAA RELEASES ITS TOP VEHICLE PICKS FOR COMMUTERS

    Story provided by AAA

AAA has released its top vehicle picks for commuters. Long commutes have become an increasingly common daily activity for many Americans, and having the right vehicle for those long drives is key not only to saving money and being environmentally-friendly, but also staying safe and comfortable during many hours on the road.

The average motorist spends about 41 minutes a day traveling about 22.5 miles roundtrip to/from work in personal vehicles, according to the National Household Travel Survey.

AAA Auto Buying’s team of experts, who test drove and reviewed hundreds of vehicles for the AAA AutoMaker vehicle research web site (www.AAA.com/AutoMaker), have compiled a list of top vehicles picks for commuters based upon practicality, safety, comfort, fuel efficiency and affordability.

AAA’s top picks for commuter vehicles

Honda Insight: This car is among the ultimate in gasoline fuel economy while being reasonably comfortable for the driver and front-seat passenger. It’s also less costly and more fun to drive than some of its hybrid competitors.

Ford Fusion: Four-cylinder versions offer an appealing combination of power, riding AAA comfort and handling competence. The Hybrid offers even more economy, but the fuel savings come with a major bump in the purchase price.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI: Everything that you ever hated about diesels has been exorcised in this latest version of the Volkswagen diesel engine. It is quiet, with just a trace of diesel clatter at idle; peppy, especially when underway; and every bit as economical as the most miserly hybrids. It also is great fun to drive. Comfortable front seats are a plus.

Hyundai Elantra: The new Blue edition is good for 35 miles per gallon. This fourth generation Elantra also is reasonably accommodating for a driver and three passengers with the interior nicely done. The 10-year/100,000-mile warranty suggests that you could keep this car in the daily commuting grind for years.

Subaru Legacy/Outback: These new models with their horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engines perform well, and with their redesign for 2010, they now offer much better fuel economy and enhanced rear seat leg room.

Honda Civic: Affordable, dependable, economical and comfortable, the Civic is one of the better-performing compacts for a wide range of uses, including commuting. For drivers who want to enjoy the trip even more, the 197 horsepower Si sedan deserves a careful look.

Chevrolet Malibu: Stylish inside and out, the Malibu also is a competent performer on the road. Four-cylinder models offer more than enough power for the daily commute and promise decent fuel economy. The passenger cabin is nicely finished and roomy, both in the front and rear, making it a good choice for carpooling.

Honda Accord: Good for the commute and good for family transportation, the Accord is roomy, solid and economical when equipped with the four-cylinder engine. It also offers road manners that are beyond reproach.

Mazda3: The body for 2010 may not be to everyone’s taste, but there is no arguing with its crisp handling and above average power for the compact field. Fuel economy also is good. The ride can be a little flinty, so commuters facing long stretches of neglected urban highways may want to look elsewhere. However, for people who enjoy driving, the handling will more than make up for a few abrupt ride motions.

Commuter vehicles offering efficiency and more

Practicality is an important factor that many commuters look for when seeking the ideal vehicle for long commutes. However, AAA Auto Buying experts understand that some want a vehicle that can serve dual purposes such as an efficient commuter vehicle that addresses needs for family or recreation or desires for luxury or fun. Because of this, AAA offers their picks for vehicles that can help address consumers’ secondary needs while still providing a smart choice for long commutes.

Mini Cooper: A premium subcompact, the Mini is sporty and economical with fuel. Few cars are as much fun to drive. Commuters will be able to take one passenger only and the purchase price is higher than you might expect, based on size alone. However, few cars are as enjoyable on the road or offer as many safety features. Commuters might even choose to take the long way home.

Chevrolet Corvette: Who says the drive to work has to be boring? The Corvette is anything but, and when driven appropriately, it can even return near-compact car fuel economy of around 26 mpg on the highway.

Buick Enclave: Handling the commute for up to eight people, the Enclave combines an exceptionally quiet ride with competent handling and surprising room in all three rows. It makes for a smart choice for those seeking a large family vehicle on the weekends.

Mercedes-Benz GL: Roomy seating for seven, unexcelled refinement, all-wheel drive and the option of a surprisingly economical (for the vehicle size) diesel engine make this a highly desirable commuter for multi-adult carpools.

Volkswagen GTI: Sporty, fun to drive and able to return mid- to upper-20 mile per gallon fuel economy results with the 200-hp turbocharged engine, the GTI is full of surprises. Even the rear seat is good for two adults and the cargo area is surprisingly roomy. Four workers can easily store large laptop carrying briefcases in the rear and then be quite comfortable for the ride to and from work.

BMW 3-Series: The first sports sedan remains the best by many measures. What more enjoyable way to get to work and then return home? The engines are impressive for their power and refinement, the handling is top notch and the build quality is excellent, as would be expected for the price.

RAM 1500 NAMED TRAILER BOATS MAGAZINE 2010 TOW VEHICLE OF THE YEAR

                                                                                        Story provided by Dodge

Trailer Boats magazine has chosen the Ram 1500 as its 2010 Tow Vehicle of the Year.

The 28th annual tow vehicle competition included a trio of 2010 half-ton pickups with crew-size cabs and the largest available gasoline engines, all in four-wheel-drive configurations. Each was tested while towing the same Mako 234 Center Console boat and trailer weighing about 6,000 pounds.

The test results are detailed in the April 2010 issue of Trailer Boats (on sale now), with coverage going live online at www.TrailerBoats.com beginning April 5.

With its bold exterior design, refined interior, engineering excellence, superb innovation and best-in-class features, amenities and ride quality, the Ram 1500 is a game changer in terms of its ability to “outsmart” and “out-tough” the competition.

The Ram 1500 ranks at the top of Strategic Vision 2009 Total Quality Index (TQI) in the full-size truck segment.  According to the survey, the Ram 1500 leads the way with the highest Total Quality score of any truck in the 15-year history of the study.

For 2010, Ram 1500’s towing capability has increased to 10,450 pounds. Combining Ram's legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine and the segment-exclusive multi-link coil spring rear suspension, Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) has increased to 15,500 pounds, from 14,000 pounds, with the 140.5-inch wheelbase, 5.7-liter engine and 3.92 rear axle. This increased GCWR equates to an increase in tow rating.

The 2010 Ram incorporates a first-in-segment, multi-link coil spring rear suspension that improves ride and handling without sacrificing payload (as much as 1,900 pounds) and towing capability (as much as an estimated 10,450 pounds).

New interior features include fuel-saver indicator on 3.7-liter models, a new premium Tire-pressure Monitoring (TPM) system and Park-Assist indicator in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) display.

Other new features include an iPod Control that connects most iPod-compatible devices using an iPod Control cable. The cable enables iPod devices to be controlled through Ram’s media center radio or steering-wheel radio controls.

New exterior features include available folding trailer-tow mirrors, integrated trailer-brake controller, power trailer-tow mirrors, electro-chromic mirrors and new 22-inch tires and wheels included in R/T package.

Fuel economy enhancements for 2010 include interactive Decel Fuel Shut Off (iDFSO) on all engines. iDFSO turns off the flow of fuel during vehicle deceleration for improved real-world fuel economy without any noticeable changes in engine performance.

Standard on the 2010 Ram two-wheel-drive regular cab and Quad Cab models is a 3.7-liter Magnum V-6 engine, generating 210 hp (156 kW) and 235 pounds-feet (319 N•m) of torque.

Other available engines include the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with Multi Displacement System (MDS) that produces 390 hp (291 kW) and 407 pounds-feet (548 N•m) of torque and the Flex-fuel 4.7-liter V-8 that generates 310 hp (231 kW) and 330 pounds-feet (447 N•m) of torque.

The 2010 Ram Crew Cab 1500 features an available first-in-segment RamBox cargo management system that provides weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage compartments integrated into both cargo-box sides for effortless access and convenience. The RamBox system includes a bed divider/2-foot bed extender for oversize loads and a rail system with sliding, adjustable cleats for infinitely adjustable tie-down capability.

Ram 1500 is available in a regular cab, Quad Cab and crew-cab configuration and offers three box lengths: 8-foot (regular cab), 6-foot 4-inches (regular cab and Quad Cab), and 5-foot 7-inches (crew cab). For 2010, Ram 1500 is available in five distinct trim levels —ST, SLT, TRX, Sport and Laramie.

    FORD DEBUNKS MAINTENANCE MYTHS

                                                                Story provided by Ford

They’ve been around awhile – a snippet of advice here, an old adage there. They’re the guidelines that are supposed to help keep cars running in top condition. Problem is, most of them aren’t based in fact – or they’re just plain outdated.

Ford decided to debunk a few of the most popular maintenance myths, including the following:

MYTH: Cars need oil changes every three months or 3,000 miles.
False: That used to be true, but not with newer cars. Because of synthetic oils that don’t break down as quickly, consumers actually don’t need oil changes as often – more like every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. (There may be two recommendations for oil-change intervals: one for normal driving and one for hard use. Check your maintenance guide to be sure.)

SAVE: Either way, there’s a considerable savings here: Let’s say you’re an average consumer who drives 12,000 miles a year, which means you would need about four oil changes a year under the old formula. With the new extended mileage, consumers need only about two oil changes a year, cutting their bill for oil changes in half – you could pocket upward of $50 a year or $650 in the lifetime of your car and do something to help the environment by saving oil.

MYTH: You need to let your vehicle engine warm up in cold weather.
False: Your vehicle’s engine only needs a warm-up period of about 10 seconds – you’re actually the only one who may feel chilly. The engine warms up while you drive. Running your car any longer beforehand is just a waste of gas.

SAVE: Depending on engine size, temperature and other variables, modern cars can use about a third of a gallon of gas per hour while idling. By giving up that 10-minute idle every weekday morning, you could save more than a gallon a month – $32 a year or $416 over the life of the vehicle.

MYTH: Premium gas is a treat for your car.
False: Unless your vehicle is specifically tailored to take advantage of the higher octane level in the fuel, you’re wasting your money. Go by what is recommended in your owner’s manual and leave it at that.

SAVE: At current gas prices, drivers may save up to $150 a year by opting for unleaded gas instead of premium.

MYTH: The number listed on the sidewall of your tire is the recommended tire pressure. False: In most cases, this is actually the maximum pressure allowed for that tire. The recommended amount of pressure is usually listed on the inside door panel – check your owner’s manual to be sure.

SAVE: The government estimates that the average driver’s tires are under-inflated by 26 percent. Generally, under-inflated treads lower gas mileage about a half percent for each pound lacking when the pressure of all four tires is added up. An average driver with under-inflated tires could add $79 a year to his or her fuel bill – or more than $1,027 in the lifetime of the vehicle. You could also save nearly half a barrel of crude oil per year by keeping your tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended level. Per the EPA, one barrel of crude oil equals 42 gallons of gasoline.

MYTH: Buy gas in the morning and you’ll save money.
False: The old adage was to fill up in the morning when gas was coolest and most dense because gas is sold by volume and you would get more gas for your buck.

But gas is sold in underground, nonmetallic tanks that typically hold about 10,000 gallons, and it will take a lot of sunlight to raise the temperature even a degree. (However, pumping your gas when its cooler does mean less release of vapors, which is better for the environment.)

SAVE: Do your research before buying. Ford’s SIRIUS Travel Link sorts gas stations by price on the navigation screen, but Web sites such as MSNAutos.com can also help drivers navigate to bargains. In our quick research, we found two gas stations in New York City – less than a mile apart – with 30 cents per gallon price difference. If you know before you go and fill up for less every time, it could result in $227 in your pocket annually, or $2,951 saved over the lifetime of your car. All totaled, by implementing small changes, drivers could save up to $538 a year or $6,610 in the lifetime of their vehicle. In today’s economy, every penny counts. That’s why it’s important to get the facts.

Editor’s note: All savings estimates are calculated based on the EPA estimates for a 2010 Ford Taurus, which achieves 28 mpg highway and 18 mpg city. This model has a 19-gallon gas tank; the EPA estimates that each fill-up, at current gas prices ($2.70 a gallon), will cost $46.17 and annual fuel costs are $1,843. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

    MAINTAINING YOUR CAR BATTERY

                                        Story provided by CarMax

Replacing a car battery can be a hassle. That's why CarMax Inc., the nation's largest retailer of used cars, wants you to know how to keep your battery in top-notch condition.

“Car batteries supply electrical energy to retain the memory in the onboard computers as well as the energy needed to start the engine,” said Tom Damon, ASE Master Technician for CarMax. “Proper maintenance is vital to keep your vehicle running year round, especially during the harsh winter months.”

CarMax technicians offer a few do's and don'ts to help you safely maintain your car battery for peak performance:

      Do’s

    • Wear proper eye, hand and clothing protection when working with batteries.
    • Check the terminals where cables connect to be sure they are tight and corrosion free. If corrosion is present, have terminals cleaned by a professional.
    • Lubricate terminals with a dab of petroleum jelly to keep cables clean and free from corrosion.
    • Make sure the battery is firmly secured to its mounting bracket. An unsecured battery can become damaged and cause short circuits.
    • Check the fluid level unless it's a maintenance-free battery. If the fluid is low, add distilled water. If there is no fluid visible, then replace the battery.
    • Keep your battery case clean. Dirt conducts electricity and can discharge the battery. Use a solution of baking soda dissolved in warm water to clean the battery. Wet the case and agitate with a nylon bristle brush to scrub surface. Rinse well with plain water.
    • Batteries come in many different sizes. When replacing a car battery, make sure you choose the right size for your vehicle.  When it comes to car batteries, bigger is not always better.
    • Prior to disconnecting the battery, check manufacturer specifications on what items may be disrupted when disconnecting the battery. For example, the radio may require a security code when the battery has been disconnected.
    • Always disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last.
    • Charge battery in a well-ventilated area.

      Don’ts

    • If your battery is frozen, do not charge it, as it may explode! One visual sign of a frozen battery is that the sides are bowed out. This condition is dangerous; the battery will need to be replaced.
    • If you need to charge your battery yourself, switch the charger to a low-charge setting. Most chargers have this feature, but if not, have a professional charge the battery.
    • Don't charge a dead battery with a car's alternator. An alternator is not designed to function as a charger, and it may be damaged or have a shortened life as a result.
    • Never lean over a battery when charging, testing, or jump-starting the engine.
    • Don't disconnect battery cables while engine is running (your battery acts as a filter).
    • Don’t let the battery get totally discharged. Most car batteries get their power from lead cells submerged in electrolyte and these cells can be damaged when the battery is totally discharged.
    • Don't let the battery get hot while charging.

CAR CARE COUNCIL TIPS CAN HELP SAVE MONEY AT PUMP

Story provided by Car Care Council

Consumers’ chronic pain at the pump is returning with gas prices 67 percent higher than a year ago and probably heading back toward $3 a gallon soon. While you can’t control the price of gas, you can control how much gas you burn by performing proper maintenance and how you drive. Performing simple and inexpensive maintenance can save as much as $1,200 per year in gas costs.

The Car Care Council offers these gas-saving maintenance and driving tips:

    • Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
    • Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by 3 percent.
    • Replace dirty or clogged air filters and improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.
    • Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon.
    • Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon.
    • Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 mph.
    • Avoid excessive idling. Idling gets zero miles per gallon. Warming up the vehicle for one or two minutes is sufficient.
    • Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city.
    • Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multi-purpose trip.
    • Don’t haul unneeded items in the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent.

KEEPING YOUR CLUNKER CAN SAVE YOUR WALLET

Many Americans with so-called “clunkers” have considered the purchase of a new car, but the cost in today’s economic climate may be prohibitive. The Engine Repower Council suggests that keeping your current vehicle running efficiently is a sensible alternative that can save big money in the long run.

Edmonds.com reports that the average car loan payment is $479 per month over a four-year period. For the cost of an average down payment on a new car or truck, you can repower your vehicle’s worn out engine with a remanufactured/rebuilt engine. Considering that nearly $23,000 can be saved by skipping car loan payments for the life of a four-year loan, installing a remanufactured/rebuilt engine is clearly a sound and cost-effective investment.

With repowering, a vehicle’s engine or an identical one from another like-vehicle is completely disassembled, cleaned, machined and remanufactured/rebuilt. Unlike used or junk yard engines with an unknown performance and maintenance history, remanufactured/rebuilt engines are dependable, reliable and backed by excellent warranty programs.

In addition to its financial benefits, remanufactured/rebuilt engines also save the tremendous amount of energy used in processing discarded engines and vehicles. It also saves an incredible amount of raw materials that would have been used in building a new engine.

RAM 2500 POWER WAGON IS ‘2010 PICKUP TRUCK OF THE YEAR’

                                                                Story provided by Chrysler

The editors of Four Wheeler have named the all-new 2010 Ram 2500 Power Wagon pickup the magazine’s “2010 Pickup Truck of the Year.”

This year’s competitors included four new pickup trucks, the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Power Wagon, the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty with a Cummins diesel, the Ford SVT F-150 Raptor and the Toyota Tundra. To qualify for the competition, a vehicle must have been entirely new or have substantial mechanical revisions from a previous model year.

For 2010, the all-new Ram Heavy Duty is available in five distinct trim models — ST, SLT, TRX, Power Wagon and Laramie. Each has a unique appearance and offers various equipment options.

Power train choices include the legendary 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, which produces 350 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 650 pounds-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm.

The most durable and reliable engine in its class, the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel features standard oil-change intervals of 7,500 miles. It also has major-overhaul intervals

of 350,000 miles, providing more than a 100,000-mile advantage over the competition.

The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty comes standard with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 gasoline engine, delivering 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 400 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The 5.7-liter HEMI was redesigned for 2009, with several new and improved technologies, including Variable-valve Timing (VVT), increased compression ratio, active intake manifold with long runners for low-end torque and short runners for high-rpm power, improved cylinder head port flow efficiency and reduced-restriction exhaust and induction systems.

Ram Heavy Duty delivers the performance and amenities customers demand. The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty pickups feature a hydro-formed, fully boxed frame with advanced torsional rigidity and stiffness. A coil-spring suspension setup is used up front, while the multi-leaf spring design is maintained in the rear for heavy-duty capability. Front and rear shocks and springs are tuned for optimum ride quality and capability.

Improved suspension tuning and new C-pillar hydra mounts were added to the 2010 Ram Heavy Duty models to improve damping through the frame-bending mode frequency in order to better manage shake and after-shake response. The result is reduced shake, which means an improved ride for the customer.

The new 2010 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups offer the only standard exhaust brake in the segment (diesel-equipped models). This feature reduces brake fade, prolongs brake life and provides confidence and safety when hauling heavy loads on downhill grades. Large front (360 mm) and rear (358 mm) brakes with integrated Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) increase brake life and braking stability.

An available integrated trailer brake control provides better driver control in towing situations. Trailer brake control information is conveniently displayed in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC), which is standard on all Ram heavy-duty models equipped with a diesel engine and available on gas SLT, TRX and Laramie models.

In addition, new 2010 Ram transmissions include Electronic Range Select, which enables the driver to manually limit the highest available transmission gear, allowing manual upshifts and downshifts based on road speed and engine speed. A tow/haul mode switch enhances tow capability while towing. Tow/haul mode is available on both five-speed and six-speed automatic transmissions.

The truck is priced starting at 28,165 for regular cab models, $31,415 for crew cab models and $36,865 for Mega Cab models. All prices include $950 for destination.

    MAGELLAN ROADMATE 1475T ($299)

                                                    By NITISH S. RELE

                                                    editor@motoringtampabay.com

You couldn’t ask for a more user-friendly portable navigation device. The Magellan RoadMate 1475T is one up on the previous 1470 model in the sense now you can get subscription-fee, real-time traffic updates (via the Traffic Link vehicle power adapter).

The OneTouch favorites menu on the 4.7-inch color screen places personally selected addresses and searches at your fingertips. But what we found most helpful was the spoken street name and a chime before each turn and the Highway Lane Assist, which points the user in the right direction.

And of course there are millions (at least six) of Points of Interests you can click on, including ATMs, gas stations, restaurants, coffee shops and hotels. If you are an AAA member, you will appreciate the AAA Tourbook listings (places to stay, play and dine) and member Roadside Assistance menu (for a tow truck or a repair shop). You also can plan multiple stops during a trip.

If in the market for an affordable portable navigation device, we suggest you take a close look at the Magellan RoadMate 1475T. It’s one decision you will be happy to have made as you set out on your next outing.

    ASK MEINEKE JOHN!

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR FUEL DOLLARS GO FURTHER

    By JOHN TAYLOR

    *
    AIR PRESSURE IN YOUR TIRES

Tire pressure should be checked when the tire is cold (meaning the car has not been driven in a couple of hours). There is usually a sticker in the drivers doorjamb that indicates the manufacturer's recommended pressure. I read an article a couple of years ago that stated about 40 percent of all the wasted fuel in the United States was due to low air pressure in automobile tires.

    * ENGINE AIR FILTERS

A dirty air filter restricts the flow of air going into your engine, thereby causing you to step further on the gas to get up to your desired speed. The more you step on the gas, additional fuel is added to the engine.

    * ENGINE OIL

Dirty engine oil carries minute particles of dirt with it to your oil filter. Just like the air filter, it traps the dirt and becomes clogged, restricting the flow of oil. This causes the oil pump to work harder. The result? The engine burns more gas to pump that oil.

    * FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM

Deposits on fuel injectors, valves, pistons, throttle bodies, etc., can be the basis for a poor mixture of fuel and air. This can lead the engine to run below its maximum efficiency and burn extra fuel.

    * TUNE-UPS

Worn sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, coils and other ignition parts can cause improper burning of the gas when it gets into the engine, reducing the engine's efficiency, causing poor gas mileage!

Have a question about tune-ups alignments, tires, brakes, air conditioning, water pumps or any maintenance-related concern? E-mail editor@motoringtampabay.com and our columnist John Taylor will have an answer for you on this www.motoringtampabay.com
