We ended last about getting your lines straight on your car. By now, your car has primer on the body, and is ready for the final prep. This is the most important part of any paint job, and extra care should be taken to ensure that all waves and small dings have been corrected. There are different tools to accommodate you while blocking the panels for perfect end result. If you have never done this before, you should visit a good paint shop, to obtain the correct blocking tools. The blocking of the car is a tedious and time-consuming job. But with every stroke you make, you will get the car to the desired perfect condition. So, do not give up too quickly. Once you believe you are ready for painting, get a black aerosol spray paint, and spray a light mist over the entire body. Wait until it is dry, then block again. You will find many places where the black spray is visible. Repair waves, and complete your blocking of the imperfections. The final primer coat should be applied now and lightly hand-sand it. This method is used mostly with an acrylic type of paint (single stage). With other types of paint, many times a final primer will be followed up with a first coat of paint. This same method was used on a 1963 Studebaker Avanti in our shop, and we were able to determine that the original manufacturer paint was indeed base coat/ clear coat. This type of painting should not be tackled by a novice.
Different types of paint are available, and will be used in accordance of the owner wishes and/or what was applicable to the car when it was originally produced. Many times, when a car comes into our workshop, we have to determine what type of paint was used by the factory. Here is how you figure that out. Take a piece of sandpaper and sand a small piece anywhere on the body. Do you see the dust colored or is it milky? If it is a color, you have a solid paint. If it is milky, you have a base coat/ clear coat.
